<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">Whoever coined the term "necessary evil" might have been thinking of pain. No one wants it, yet it's the body's way of getting your attention when something is wrong. You're probably sufficiently in tune with your body to know when the pain is just a bother, perhaps the result of moving furniture a day or two before or eating that third enchilada. It's when pain might signal something more serious that the internal dialogue begins:</span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">"OK, this isn't something to fool around with."</span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">"But I can't miss my meeting."</span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">"And how many meetings will you miss if you land in the hospital?"</span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">"I'll give it one more day."</span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">Etc.</span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">You need a guide. WebMD consulted doctors in cardiology, internal medicine, geriatrics, and psychiatry so you'll understand which pains you must not ignore -- and why. And, of course, if in doubt, get medical attention.</span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; text-align: justify;">
<b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">No. 1: Worst Headache of Your Life</span></b></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">Get medical attention immediately. "If you have a cold, it could be a sinus headache," says Sandra Fryhofer, MD, MACP, spokeswoman for the American College of Physicians. "But you could have a brain hemorrhage or brain tumor. With any pain, unless you're sure of what caused it, get it checked out."</span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">Sharon Brangman, MD, FACP, spokeswoman for the American Geriatrics Society, tells WebMD that when someone says they have the worst headache of their life, "what we learned in medical training was that was a classic sign of a brain aneurysm. Go immediately to the ER."</span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; text-align: justify;">
<b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">No. 2: Pain or Discomfort in the Chest, Throat, Jaw, Shoulder, Arm, or Abdomen</span></b></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">Chest pain could be pneumonia or a heart attack. But be aware that heart conditions typically appear as discomfort, not pain. "Don't wait for pain," says cardiologist Jerome Cohen, MD. "Heart patients talk about pressure. They'll clench their fist and put it over their chest or say it's like an elephant sitting on their chest."</span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">The discomfort associated with heart disease could also be in the upper chest, throat, jaw, left shoulder or arm, or abdomen and might be accompanied by nausea. "I'm not too much worried about the 18-year-old, but if a person has unexplained, persistent discomfort and knows they're high risk, they shouldn't wait," says Cohen. "Too often people delay because they misinterpret it as [heartburn] or GI distress. Call 911 or get to an emergency room or physician's office. If it turns out to be something else, that's great." </span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">He tells WebMD that intermittent discomfort should be taken seriously as well. "There might be a pattern, such as discomfort related to excitement, emotional upset, or exertion. For example, if you experience it when you're gardening, but it goes away when you sit down, that's angina. It's usually worse in cold or hot weather."</span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">"A woman's discomfort signs can be more subtle," says Cohen, who is director of preventive cardiology at Saint Louis University School of Medicine. "Heart disease can masquerade as GI symptoms, such as bloating, GI distress, or discomfort in the abdomen. It's also associated with feeling tired. Risk for heart disease increases dramatically after menopause. It kills more women than men even though men are at higher risk at any age. Women and their physicians need to be on their toes."</span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; text-align: justify;">

<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">"Most often it's arthritis," says Brangman, who is professor and chief of geriatrics at SUNY Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, N.Y. Other possibilities include a heart attack or abdominal problems. "One danger is aortic dissection, which can appear as either a nagging or sudden pain. People who are at risk have conditions that can change the integrity of the vessel wall. These would include high blood pressure, a history of circulation problems, smoking, and diabetes."</span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; text-align: justify;">

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">Still have your appendix? Don't flirt with the possibility of a rupture. Gallbladder and pancreas problems, stomach ulcers, and intestinal blockages are some other possible causes of abdominal pain that need attention.</span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>

<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">One of the lesser known dangers is deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a blood clot that can occur in the leg's deep veins. It affects 2 million Americans a year, and it can be life-threatening. "The danger is that a piece of the clot could break loose and cause pulmonary embolism [a clot in the lungs], which could be fatal," says Fryhofer. Cancer, obesity, immobility due to prolonged bed rest or long-distance travel, pregnancy, and advanced age are among the risk factors.</span></div>

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">"Sometimes there's just swelling without pain," says Brangman. "If you have swelling and pain in your calf muscles, see a doctor immediately."</span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; text-align: justify;">

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">Nearly a quarter of the 23 million Americans who have diabetes are undiagnosed, according to the American Diabetes Association. "In some people who don't know they have diabetes, peripheral neuropathy could be one of the first signs," says Brangman. "It's a burning or pins-and-needles sensation in the feet or legs that can indicate nerve damage."</span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; text-align: justify;">

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">"Various painful, physical symptoms are common in depression," says psychiatrist Thomas Wise, MD. "Patients will have vague complaints of headaches, abdominal pain, or limb pain, sometimes in combination."</span></div>

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">Because the pain might be chronic and not terribly debilitating, depressed people, their families, and health care professionals might dismiss the symptoms. "Furthermore, the more depressed you are, the more difficulty you have describing your feelings," says Wise, who is the psychiatry department chairman at Inova Fairfax Hospital in Fairfax, Va. "All of this can lead the clinician astray."</span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; text-align: justify;">

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">Other symptoms must be present before a diagnosis of depression can be made. "Get help when you've lost interest in activities, you're unable to work or think effectively, and you can't get along with people," he says. "And don't suffer silently when you're hurting."</span></div>

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">He adds there's more to depression than deterioration of the quality of life. "It has to be treated aggressively before it causes structural changes in the brain."</span></div>

Uploaded on 12 Apr 2011 : On the Season Premiere of Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution filmed in Los Angeles and aired on April 12, 2011, Jamie demonstrates how 70% of America's ground beef contains leftover cow parts (a.k.a. "pink slime") containing e.coli and salmonella that has been treated with ammonia. Ammonia treated meat can be found in virtually all conventional grocery stores, fast food restaurants, many national restaurant chains, and school cafeterias. The saddest part is that the USDA allows this ammonia treated meat to enter the marketplace and with no labeling requirement on the packaging to inform the consumer that the meat their about to buy contains ammonia, thus hiding the truth and pulling a wool over the consumer's eye. This is certainly a rude awakening to the majority of Americans that don't know where the meat in their fridge, the meat in their conventional local grocery store, the meat in their fast food hamburger, and the meat in their restaurant made hamburger comes from. How do you avoid this poison? Buy beef that has come from grass fed cows, which can be found at natural and organic grocery stores and your local farmers market. No matter the size of your town or city, grass fed beef (real beef) is not out of reach. Unlike ammonia treated beef, grass fed beef is clearly labeled and contains no ammonia.</div>

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;">A team of scientists at the Boston Children’s Hospital have invented what is being considered one the greatest medical breakthroughs in recent years. They have designed a microparticle that can be injected into a person’s bloodstream that can quickly oxygenate their blood. This will even work if the ability to breathe has been restricted, or even cut off entirely.</span></span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px none; color: #444444; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; line-height: 21px; margin: 0px 0px 14px; padding: 0px; text-align: justify; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: normal; word-spacing: 0px;">

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;">This finding has the potential to save millions of lives every year. The microparticles can keep an object alive for up to 30 min after respiratory failure. This is accomplished through an injection into the patients’ veins. Once injected, the microparticles can oxygenate the blood to near normal levels. This has countless potential uses as it allows life to continue when oxygen is needed but unavailable. For medical personnel, this is just enough time to avoid risking a heart attack or permanent brain injury when oxygen is restricted or cut off to patients.<br /><br />Dr. John Kheir, who first began the study, works in the Boston Children’s Hospital Department of Cardiology. He found inspiration for the drug in 2006, when he was treating a girl in the ICU who had a severe case of pneumonia. At the time, the girl didn’t have a breathing tube, when at the time she suffered from a pulmonary hemorrhage. This means her lungs had begin to fill up with blood, and she finally went into cardiac arrest. It took doctors about 25 minutes to remove enough blood from her lungs to allow her to breath. <span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;">The microparticles used are composed of oxygen gas pocketed in a layer of lipids. A Lipid is a natural molecule that can store energy and act as a part of a cell membrane, they can be made of many things such as wax, vitamins, phospholipids, and in this case fat is the lipid that stores the oxygen.</span></span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px none; color: #444444; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; line-height: 21px; margin: 0px 0px 14px; padding: 0px; text-align: justify; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: normal; word-spacing: 0px;">
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;">These microparticles are around two to four micrometers in length and carry about three to four times the oxygen content of our own red blood cells. In the past, researchers had a difficult time succeeding as prior tests caused gas embolism. This meant that the gas molecules would become stuck trying to squeeze through the capillaries. They corrected this issue by packaging them into small deformable particles rather ones where the structure was rigid.</span></span></div>

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;">In the end, this is an amazing medical advancement and I cant help but recall the movie the Abyss when they took the pill, their helmets filled with air, and they were told they can breathe the water. Well what if they really couldn’t “breathe” water” but since the urge to breathe is natural, that must take place… even if you’re not breathing air per se. But your body was provided with enough oxygen for a time period by taking a pill. It’s just goes to show that anything, absolutely anything that can be thought up, can potentially one day become reality. Thank you scientists, for reminding me that people and their ingenuity are nothing short of awesome.</span></span></div>

<div style="background-color: white; line-height: 20.796875px; margin-bottom: 15px; margin-top: 15px; padding: 0px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Maggi Mee is perhaps one of the most recognizable types of food among Malaysians today. It is the instant noodle which is easy to cook and pretty much synonymous with Malaysian food. You can find Maggi in almost every corner of the country while they have been ‘exported’ to other parts of the world too.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; line-height: 20.796875px; margin-bottom: 15px; margin-top: 15px; padding: 0px;">
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><span id="more-4181" style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;"></span></span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; line-height: 20.796875px; margin-bottom: 15px; margin-top: 15px; padding: 0px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Cooking Maggi mee can be very easy and swift but you need to be aware that if you cook it wrongly, it might be damaging to your health. Therefore, you must ensure that although Maggi is what is known as instant noodle, it might not be as ‘instant’ as you might think.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; line-height: 20.796875px; margin-bottom: 15px; margin-top: 15px; padding: 0px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">The most common and perhaps ‘advertised’ method of cooking Maggi mee is to boil water, throw the noodles in, put in the seasoning and let it cook for 3 minutes. Take note that this is absolutely WRONG! In fact, it can be quite dangerous if you eat the noodles like this. If you do this, you are changing the molecular structure of the seasoning powder (MSG) and when that happens, it will become toxic. As the noodles are coated with a type of consumable wax, your body would need a few days to filter the wax.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; line-height: 20.796875px; margin-bottom: 15px; margin-top: 15px; padding: 0px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">So how should you cook your Maggi so that it is safe to eat? First boil the water with the noodles. When the noodles are cooked, remove the noodles and throw away the boiled water. This is because you have eliminated the wax from the noodles and you do not need the water. Now boil another pot of water and add the noodles in. This is an important step, turn off the stove. That is when you pour the seasoning powder in. Stir until it is ready to eat and pour it out onto a bowl and enjoy!!</span></div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px;"><br /></span></div>
<span style="background-color: white; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px;"><div style="text-align: justify;">
Doctors realised the patient was female after they found the swelling came from a large cyst on an ovary, the Hong Kong Medical Journal reported.</div>
</span><div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px;"><br /></span></div>
<span style="background-color: white; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px;"><div style="text-align: justify;">
The condition was the result of two rare genetic disorders. </div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="background-color: white; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px;">The subject had Turner syndrome, which affects girls and women and results from a problem with the chromosomes, with characteristics including infertility and short stature. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

The 1.37 meters (4.5 feet) tall patient, who grew up as an orphan, was found to have no testes, a history of urinary leakage since childhood, and stopped growing after puberty at the age of 10.</div>

The doctors said there have been only six cases where both genetic disorders have been reported in medical literature. Turner Syndrome on its own affects only one in 2,500 to 3,000 females. </div>

Most men have a X and a Y chromosome and most women have a pair of X chromosomes. But people with Turner Syndrome tend to have only one X chromosome or are missing part of their second X chromosome.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">We’ve all heard the term pH balance before, but do you know what it
actually means? The pH scale is one that measures the acidity or
alkalinity of something. In the case of <strong>alkaline foods</strong>,
we are concerned with the pH of your body. Eating certain foods may
affect this measurement, which can lead to several potentially negative
health effects.</span></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Ph levels <a href="http://www.webmd.com/diet/features/alkaline-diets-what-to-know">are measured</a>
on a scale of 0 to 14. 7.0 is considered neutral; 0 is completely
acidic, and 14 is completely alkaline. Your blood needs to be slightly
alkaline, with a pH somewhere between 7.35 and 7.45. Generally, your
body adjusts its pH levels automatically, keeping your blood right
within that target area. However, some argue that many of today’s
processed and unhealthy foods are acid-forming and throw off that
natural balance.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Too much acid, and your body begins to experience some <a href="http://www.acidalkalinediet.com/alkaline-diet-benefits#.UZX-37Wce8A">negative health effects</a>
including: fatigue, dental issues, compromised immune function, pain
and inflammatory conditions, and even premature aging. By eating foods
that are alkaline-producing, you are not depending on your body to
balance the acidity, and therefore can avoid some of these health
problems.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<h2>
5 Alkaline Foods for Better Health</h2>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Fortunately, eating a diet rich in alkaline-forming foods is quite
simple. Sticking with fresh produce is a good place to start. Here are 5
alkaline foods to get you started.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><b>1. </b><b>Lemons </b>are possibly the most alkaline foods around, plus, they offer many health benefits. Starting your day with a glass of <a href="http://naturalsociety.com/water-with-lemon-each-morning-fights-fat-boosts-immunity/">lemon water</a>
is a good way to work towards balancing your pH levels first thing.
While lemons are initially acidic, the end result is alkaline.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><b>2. </b><b>Watermelons</b> are another great alkaline-forming food, and are a great diuretic to boot. Check out some other <a href="http://naturalsociety.com/health-benefits-of-watermelon-lose-weight-protect-cancer-more/">health benefits of watermelons</a> here.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><b>3. </b><b>Cayenne peppers </b>have numerous benefits even beyond
being alkaline-forming. From their antioxidant concentration to their
potential added benefits in weight loss ventures, these peppers should
be a part of every diet.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><b>4. </b><b>Leafy Greens, </b>like many other alkalizing foods, have
a wealth of health benefits. Things like spinach, kale, chard, and
collards are rich in folate and vitamin K. They are also great helpers
for the digestive system.</span></div>

<span style="background-color: white; color: #222222;"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">When Carolyn Isbister put her 20oz baby on her chest for a cuddle, she thought that it would be the only chance she would ever have to hold her.</span></span></div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="background-color: white; color: #222222;"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Doctors had told the parents that baby Rachel only had only minutes to live because her heart was beating once every ten seconds and she was not breathing.</span></span></div>

<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><span style="background-color: white; color: #222222;">Isbister remembers:</span></span></div>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><span style="background-color: white; color: #222222;">
</span><span style="background-color: white; color: #222222;"></span></span>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><span style="background-color: white; color: #222222;">I didn’t want her to die being cold. So I lifted her out of her blanket and put her against my skin to warm her up. Her feet were so cold.</span></span></div>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><span style="background-color: white; color: #222222;">
</span></span>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="background-color: white; color: #222222;"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">It was the only cuddle I was going to have with her, so I wanted to remember the moment.” Then something remarkable happened. The warmth of her mother’s skin kick started Rachael’s heart into beating properly, which allowed her to take little breaths of her own.</span></span></div>
<span style="background-color: white; color: #222222;">
</span>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="background-color: white; color: #222222;"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">We couldn’t believe it – and neither could the doctors. She let out a tiny cry.</span></span></div>

<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #222222;"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span></span></div>
<span style="background-color: white; color: #222222;"></span><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="background-color: white; color: #222222;"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">The doctors came in and said there was still no hope – but I wasn’t letting go of her. We had her blessed by the hospital chaplain, and waited for her to slip away. But she still hung on.</span></span></div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="background-color: white; color: #222222;"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">And then amazingly the pink color began to return to her cheeks. She literally was turning from gray to pink before our eyes, and she began to warm up too.</span></span></div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="background-color: white; color: #222222;"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">The sad part is that when the baby was born, doctors took one look at her and said ‘no’.</span></span></div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="background-color: white; color: #222222;"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">They didn’t even try to help her with her breathing as they said it would just prolong her dying. Everyone just gave up on her,” her mom remembered.</span></span></div>

<span style="background-color: white; color: #222222;"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">At 24 weeks a womb infection had led to her premature labor and birth and Isbister (who also has two children Samuel, 10, and Kirsten, 8 ) said, “We were terrified we were going to lose her. <span style="background-color: white; color: #222222;"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Ian Laing, a consultant neonatologist at the hospital, said: “All the signs were that the little one was not going to make it and we took the decision to let mum have a cuddle as it was all we could do.</span></span></div>

<span id="ctl00_ctl00_ctl00_bcr_bcr_bcr_lblDrComments">The belief that calcium is the holy grail of what builds strong bones is absolutely <em>ingrained</em>
in our society, but has no basis in reality--calcium is but ONE of the
many minerals your body needs for building strong bones. Dietary
intake of magnesium, not necessarily calcium, may be the key to
developing healthy bones during childhood, according to new research
presented at the Pediatric Academic Societies (PAS) annual meeting in
the USA.</span><br />
<br />
<img height="403" longdesc="http://preventdisease.com/images/53575652174_n.jpg" src="http://preventdisease.com/images/53575652174_n.jpg" width="403" /><br />
<br />
<strong>Take a Second Peek At Calcium Claims</strong><br />
<br />
The mainstream engine has been promoting the use of calcium
to prevent weak bones for decades. Age-old myths that calcium
supplementation builds strong bones and teeth are reinforced in almost
institution. But how effective is calcium supplementation?<br />
<br />
A <span id="ctl00_ctl00_ctl00_bcr_bcr_bcr_lblDrComments3"><a href="http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2004/07/31/statins-calcium.aspx" target="_blank">2004 study</a> showed that people with excess calcium in their coronary artery and who take statins have a <strong>17-fold higher risk of heart attacks </strong>than
do those with lower arterial calcium levels; researchers
concluded that the two most definitive indicators of heart attack
were LDL levels <em>and</em> <em>calcium build-up.</em></span><br />
<br />
<span id="ctl00_ctl00_ctl00_bcr_bcr_bcr_lblDrComments4">A
2007 study showed that calcium from dietary sources has more
favorable effects on bone health than calcium from supplements in
postmenopausal women (<a href="http://www.ajcn.org/content/85/5/1428.abstract" target="_blank">Am J Clin Nutr 2007</a>).<br />
<br />
<span id="ctl00_ctl00_ctl00_bcr_bcr_bcr_lblDrComments5">A 2008 study found calcium supplements are associated with a <strong>greater number of heart attacks</strong> in postmenopausal women (<a href="http://www.bmj.com/content/336/7638/262.short" target="_blank">BMJ 2008</a>) </span></span><br />
<br />
<span id="ctl00_ctl00_ctl00_bcr_bcr_bcr_lblDrComments6">A 2010 meta-analysis showed calcium supplements (without coadministered vitamin D) are associated with <strong>increased risk for heart attack</strong> (<a href="http://www.bmj.com/content/341/bmj.c3691.full" target="_blank">BMJ 2010</a>) </span><br />
<br />
According to the National Osteoporosis Foundation (NOF), food will always be the best source of calcium: "<em>People
who get the recommended amount of calcium from foods do not need
to take a calcium supplement. These individuals still may need to
take a vitamin D supplement. Getting too much calcium from
supplements may increase the risk of kidney stones and other
health problems."</em><br />
<br />
"Calcium supplements have been widely embraced by doctors and
the public, on the grounds that they are a natural and therefore safe
way of preventing osteoporotic fractures," said the researchers, led
by Professor Sabine Rohrmann, from Zurich University's institute of
social and preventative medicine.
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
"It is now becoming clear that taking this micronutrient in
one or two daily [doses] is not natural, in that it does not reproduce
the same metabolic effects as calcium in food," they added.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Most supplements on the supplement market today contain
calcium carbonate which is an inferior form of calcium and
manufacturers attach a simple chelating agent like citric acid to make
it more absorbable, however the end product is inferior to other
calcium supplements such as calcium orotate, which is the only known
form of calcium which can effectively penetrate the membranes of
cells. <br />
<br />
Another fact most people are unaware of is the myth promoted by the dairy industry that consuming <a href="http://preventdisease.com/news/10/111810_dangers_pasteurization_homogenization.shtml" target="_blank">pasteurized dairy products</a>
such as milk or cheese increases calcium levels. This is totally
false. The pasteurization process only creates calcium carbonate,
which has absolutely no way of entering the cells without a chelating
agent. So what the body does is pull the calcium from the bones and
other tissues in order to buffer the calcium carbonate in the blood.
This process ACTUALLY CAUSES OSTEOPOROSIS. Milk definitively <strong>does not</strong> do a body good if it's pasteurized.<br />
<br />
<strong>Magnesium and Increasing Awareness </strong><br />
<br />
The new data from Professor Steven Abrams and his colleagues
at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston finds that intake and
absorption of magnesium during childhood are key predictors of total
bone mineral content and bone density - while dietary calcium intake was
not significantly associated with such measures.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
"Dietary magnesium intake may be an important, relatively
unrecognised, factor in bone mineral accretion in children," the
researchers revealed.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
"Lots of nutrients are key for children to have healthy
bones. One of these appears to be magnesium," said Abrams. "Calcium is
important, but, except for those children and adolescents with very low
intakes, may not be more important than magnesium."</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The researchers noted that parents have been long advised to
ensure their child has a good intake of calcium in order to help build
strong and healthy bones. However, the importance of other minerals
essential for bone health, such as magnesium, have not been so well
promoted.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Abrams and his team suggested that it may soon be the case that
parents are urged to ensure their children also consume enough
magnesium.<br />
<br />
Greater magnesium intake is significantly
related to higher bone mineral density (BMD)
in men and women. There is an approximate 2
percent increase in whole-body BMD for every 100 milligram
per day increase in magnesium.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Osteoporotic fractures are a significant health problem
in aging adults, Dr. Kathryn M. Ryder, of the
University of Tennessee, Memphis, and
colleagues note in their report. Given the
high prevalence of low BMD and fracture, small
improvements in BMD may have a large public health effect.<br />
<br />
Magnesium is a "lesser-studied" component of bone that
may play a role in calcium metabolism and bone
strength, they add.<br />
<br />
<strong>Supplementing With Magnesium</strong></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
For the majority of human history, the ratio of calcium to
magnesium in the diet was 1:1, a ratio that's considered optimal. A
ratio that's between 1:1 and 2:1 is adequate (for example, 800 mg of
calcium to 400 mg of magnesium). Unfortunately, today's diets contain
an average of 10 times more calcium than magnesium.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Magnesium comes in many forms. Magnesium oxide or chloride
is fine, as is chelated magnesium. Capsules usually contain 250-500
mg of magnesium. You can also use a calcium/magnesium supplement.
Experiment with levels. The Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) for
magnesium is 350-400 mg per day, although for optimal levels, you
may need as much as twice that amount. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
It's best to take your magnesium in divided doses throughout the
day. You can take it either on an empty stomach or with meals. You
can also add Epsom salts to your baths--Epsom salt is magnesium
sulfate. It's absorbed through the skin and will help replenish
magnesium stores. This "treatment" can easily include a relaxing
bath with a good book.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Only one percent of the body's magnesium is in the blood,
and the body will take it from bones and tissues if that level
drops. That means that a blood test could easily show a normal
reading, even when the rest of the body is very deficient. <br />
<br />
The best sources of magnesium will always be food. Dietary sources of
magnesium include green leafy vegetables. Cacao, seeds, and nuts of any
kind are among the highest food sources in magnesium.<br />

<b>Nearly one in 12 American stroke survivors may have contemplated suicide or wished themselves dead, according to a study presented at the American Stroke Association's International Stroke Conference 2013.</b>
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The proportion of stroke survivors who contemplated suicide was striking, compared with patients with other health conditions, said Amytis Towfighi, M.D., lead author of the study and an assistant professor of Clinical Neurology at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles and chair of the Department of Neurology at Rancho Los Amigos National Rehabilitation Center.
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
In a nationally representative sample of the U.S. population, 7.8 percent of stroke survivors reported suicidal thoughts, compared to 6.2 percent of heart attack survivors, 5.2 percent of diabetes patients and 4.1 percent of cancer patients. "Given the high prevalence of suicidal thoughts among stroke survivors, perhaps regular screening for suicidal ideation, in addition to depression, is warranted," Towfighi said.
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
About 7 million U.S. adults have a history of stroke, according to American Stroke Association statistics. About one third of stroke survivors develop depression, but there is little data on suicidal thoughts, Towfighi said.
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Researchers investigated how many stroke survivors had recent suicidal thoughts, as well as the characteristics of these patients using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (NHANES) conducted from 2005 to 2010. During that time, an estimated 6.2 million U.S. adults were stroke survivors.
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
NHANES is an ongoing series of elaborate, cross-sectional surveys providing a snapshot of Americans' health. This study focused on participants' responses to the following question: "Over the past two weeks, how often have you been bothered by thoughts that you would be better off dead, or of hurting yourself in some way?"
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Stroke survivors were more likely to have suicidal thoughts if they had a higher depression score, were younger, had higher body mass index, lower education level, lower poverty index, were single and were women.
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Among the stroke survivors, 17 percent suffered from depression. Depression is the most common psychological complication after stroke. "Post-stroke depression can be associated with poorer functional outcomes, worse quality of life, higher mortality, low psychological well-being, suicidal ideation and suicide," Towfighi said.
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
The researchers haven't calculated what percentage of all NHANES participants, stroke survivors or not, might be suicidal. But Towfighi cited previous studies which found an annual suicide rate that was nearly double the expected figure for the population as a whole.

<div style="text-align: justify;">
The cross-sectional design of the study didn't allow researchers to determine cause-and-effect relationships between stroke and suicidal thoughts. Additionally, the NHANES data didn't include information about how recently people's strokes had occurred, or whether the strokes were due to a ruptured blood vessel (hemorrhagic stroke) or a blocked blood vessel in the brain (ischemic stroke). The study also didn't account for patients' varying levels of disability.

Every three days, more Americans die from sudden cardiac arrest than the number who died in the 9-11 attacks. You can lessen this recurring loss by learning this hands-only CPR method that doubles a person’s chance of surviving cardiac arrest. Watch physician researchers Gordon A. Ewy, MD, and Karl Kern, MD, demonstrate the easy, life-saving method that they developed at the University of Arizona College of Medicine.

But we’ve got 8 you should quit for a healthier life, and experts' tips to make the process easier. Plus, are you ready to make a life change? Take our quiz to find out...
<br />
<br />
Is having too many cocktails, chain-smoking cigarettes or skimping on sleep par for the course for you? If so, your health – and sometimes your life – may depend on making some changes pronto.
<br />
<br />
Kick your bad habits to the curb starting January 1, 2013 with tips we’ve culled from top experts.
<br />
<br />
Stick to your new plan for 21 consecutive days – the amount of time psychologists have found it takes for action to become routine – and before you know it, your bad habit will be so 2012.
<br />
<br />
Bad habit #1: Drinking Too Much
<br />
<br />
Why you should kick it: “More than one drink a day is associated with high blood pressure and triglycerides and an increased risk of heart disease,” says Nieca Goldberg, M.D., chief of women’s cardiac care at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City and author of Dr. Nieca Goldberg’s Complete Guide to Women’s Health (Ballantine). “Heavy alcohol intake is associated with a higher risk of breast cancer and osteoporosis.”
<br />
<br />
Too many cocktails can also send your mood downhill because alcohol is a central nervous system depressant, adds Catherine Birndorf, M.D., founding director of the Payne Whitney Women’s Program at New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center.
<br />
<br />
<b>How to kick it:</b>
<br />
<br />
Set a limit. Restrict yourself to no more than one drink per day: a 5-ounce glass of wine, 12 ounces of beer or 1-1/2 ounces of 80-proof alcohol.
Keep your hands busy. At parties, carry a clutch purse, so you have only one free hand (which you need to carry a plate). After you’ve had your one drink, sip a fun, but non-alcoholic beverage, such as seltzer with orange or cranberry juice.<br />
